My Why.
Growing up a ballerina, I did not have a childhood sport that I one day hoped to be broadcasting on the sidelines for. I knew that if I wanted ballet to always be in my life, I had to become a professional dancer. However, I was not blessed with pointy feet and hyper-extended legs. While my ballet career ended when I graduated high school, I learned the important art of storytelling.

A ballerina’s job is to precisely convey a story to an audience through carefully selected choreography and music. In many ways, I found the same art and beauty in sports journalism. Now, video is my choreography and words are my music.

In my time as a sports anchor and reporter at WYMT-TV, I have “choreographed” stories about a record-setting athlete that will always be remembered by a small coal town in Appalachia, a community that is mourning the tragic loss of a 14-year-old football player and about a pioneer in baseball who watched the team he started win a state title for the first time in program history. My “why” is using the power of sports journalism to connect with and care about athletes and their communities on a human level. Finding the storylines between the stats and scores is the most gratifying part of the job for me. The thrilling fan bases and electric game-day atmospheres are a plus, too.
